Lessons in War

Re Sion Colvin’s Aug. 11 letter, saying of “Saving Private Ryan” that it “may cause baby boomers to think about the sacrifices of their parents”: Why is it, once again, baby boomers who need a lesson?
We grew up in the shadow of WWII and the Korean conflict. Our boys, the last drafted Army, fought the cursed Vietnam War. They didn’t even get to come home heroes. In fact, why point to any generation as needing a lesson in war? Why not continue to honor all soldiers from all wars and say, “Thank you for making the ultimate sacrifice.” It’s up to every family to make Memorial Day more than just the first barbecue of the season.
