6.1 Temblor Shakes Philippines

MANILA — A strong earthquake Sunday shook many areas of the main Luzon island, including this capital, but there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties, seismologists said.
The temblor, with a preliminary magnitude of 6.1, struck simultaneously with thunder and hailstorms, which knocked out power in some metropolitan Manila areas, officials said.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said the earthquake was centered beneath the seabed about 18 1/2 miles west of the town of Subic in Zambales province.
The temblor struck at 1:36 p.m.
