NEW YORK — New York University Press has signed a contract to produce a three-volume Encyclopedia of Jewish Life Before the Holocaust.
It is to cover the history of Jewish communities before they were destroyed by Nazi Germany, according to NYU Press Director Niko Pfund.
The 1,800-page work, with 150 illustrations, is scheduled to be published in early 2001.
The project has been in the planning stages for 30 years. Financial terms were not disclosed, but university officials said the immensity and expense of the undertaking would require a one-year fund-raising campaign.
The encyclopedia will be published in collaboration with Yad Vashem, Israel’s Holocaust museum, and the Jerusalem Publishing House. The editors are Shmuel Spector of Yad Vashem and Geoffrey Wigoder of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
