Early Turnovers Help Marina Topple San Clemente

San Clemente committed 11 first-quarter turnovers and never recovered as Marina upset the second-ranked Tritons, 77-68, in a nonleague girls’ basketball game Saturday at Marina.
The Vikings (13-3), ranked sixth in the county, took advantage of the turnovers and led by as much as 37-14 shortly before halftime. It was 37-18 at the half.
Colleen Turnbull and Debby Caine tried to pull San Clemente (13-3) back into the game in the second half. Caine hit a three-point shot late in the third quarter to pull the Tritons within 46-36.
Powered by Karyn Fierst’s three-point shot at the end of the third quarter, Marina reopened a 16-point lead early in the fourth quarter. Turnbull finished with 31 points and Caine had 15 points.
Natalie Nakase had 18 points, six assists and five steals for the Vikings. Fierst had 14 points and five assists.
In the Santiago tournament:
No. 7 Canyon 58, El Modena 43--Tournament MVP Megan O’Neill had 19 points, five steals and five assists for Canyon (14-1).
Sara Mohkami had 16 points and seven rebounds for Canyon.
Sonora 65, Santiago 47--Sara Fister scored 22 points as Sonora won the third-place game. Teammate Brandy Davis scored 13 points for the Raiders (8-5).
Stephanie Reupena scored 17 points for Santiago (8-6).
Corona del Mar 53, Saddleback 42--Sara Dunlap made seven three-pointers in a consolation game victory for Corona del Mar (4-8). Dunlap scored 30 points.
In the Chino Hills Ayala tournament:
Foothill 62, Corona 55--Emily Baubelle scored 16 points for Foothill (6-10). Teammate Lauren Schwendimann scored 14 points.
