Buena Sees Shutout Work Both Ways

A shutout doesn’t guarantee a victory, as the Buena High girls’ team discovered in a 0-0 Channel League game at Santa Barbara on Thursday afternoon that extended its unbeaten streak in league to 61 games.
Goalkeeper Katie Maxwell made two saves for the Bulldogs (7-2-4, 2-0-2) to record her third shutout of the week and eighth of the season, giving her 75 during her high school career.
In other girls’ soccer games:
Ventura 11, Hueneme 0--Kitty Sexton scored seven goals for the Cougars (7-7, 2-2) in a Channel League victory at Ventura.
Sexton had seven of Ventura’s first eight goals.
Village Christian 6, Gabrielino 4--Kacey Sayers helped the Crusaders (3-8) come back from a 2-0 halftime deficit with five goals at Gabrielino.
Ellen Kim had 15 saves for Village Christian.
BOYS’ SOCCER
Buena 1, Santa Barbara 0--Mike Bradbury scored for the Bulldogs (10-1-2, 3-0) on a direct free kick in the fifth minute of a Channel League match at Buena.
The Bulldogs, unbeaten in the last eight matches, outshot the Dons, 19-6.
Hoover 3, Pasadena 0--Raffi Boghossian scored two second-half goals for the Tornadoes (5-3-4) in a Pacific League opener at Pasadena.
Quartz Hill 7, Antelope Valley 0--Kellie Cox and Shauna Murray each scored two goals for the Rebels (7-4-1) in a Golden League opener at Quartz Hill.
GIRLS’ WATER POLO
Harvard-Westlake 7, Louisville 6--Stephanie Dashiell scored three goals for the Wolverines (4-0, 1-0), ranked second in Southern Section Division II, in a Mission League game at Pierce College.
Buena 8, Oxnard 1--Paige Wilson scored twice in the first quarter and Brianne Fowler added two third-quarter goals for the Bulldogs (3-4, 1-3) in a Channel League victory at Oxnard.
Crista Woods also had two goals, and Carolina Robles and Brenna Huhn added one goal each for Buena.
Burroughs 7, Jurupa Valley 4--Sarah Vejar scored three goals for the Indians (4-4) in a first-round victory in the Western tournament in Anaheim.
La Canada 22, Whittier 1--Becky Johan scored eight goals for the Spartans (10-3) in a first-round victory in the Western tournament in Anaheim.
