Students Raise Funds for ‘Habitat’ House
Ventura County students who plan to build a house in Piru for Habitat for Humanity this summer exceeded their $50,000 fund-raising goal, thanks in part to a $10,000 gift from the Candle Foundation of Santa Monica.
Raising $54,000, about 100 students from five local high schools will become the first group of students west of the Mississippi to sponsor a Habitat house.
Students wrote a grant proposal to the foundation that is supported by the Candle Corp., an independent company that works with business networks.
Other than the grant, students have raised money during the past year by holding bake sales, carwashes, concerts, and faculty-student basketball games.
