Fee Hike Proposed for Lifeguard Class

The popularity of the city’s Junior Lifeguard program could drive fees up by nearly 20% this June for out-of-town participants.

The City Council on Wednesday will consider a proposal to raise nonresident fees from $105 to $125. Fees for residents would remain at $95.

The fee increase would raise about $1,500 annually.

The two five-week programs, which teach youths to safely enjoy the ocean, reached maximum enrollment last year, with 700 10- to 17-year-olds. Enrollment is growing by about 10% a year. The fees cover instruction, use of body boards and soft surfboards, a field trip, a T-shirt and patch.

Lynn Hughes, marine safety and recreation manager, said soft surfboards need to be replaced every three years. Additionally, the department hopes to reduce class sizes by hiring another instructor.
