Discovery of Pipe Bomb Snarls Traffic

NEWBURY PARK — The discovery of an 8-inch pipe bomb on the southbound Wendy Drive onramp to the Ventura Freeway on Sunday afternoon caused a massive traffic tie-up past the Conejo Grade as a bomb squad used a robot to remove the explosive device.
“We don’t know how long it was there or where it came from,” said Ventura County Sheriff’s Capt. Ken Warren. “It was a homemade bomb that we took to the range for disposal.”
Workers from the state Department of Transportation spotted the explosive near the onramp and blocked traffic before calling in the bomb team, Warren said.
“It was a real mess,” Warren said, referring to the traffic, which was backed up between 2 and 4 p.m. “But it was a legitimate bomb.”
The investigation into the source of the bomb is ongoing, according to authorities.
