Pennsylvania May Ease Water-Pollution Rules

PHILADELPHIA — Pennsylvania officials are considering relaxing water-pollution rules to bring the state in line with less-stringent federal regulations and help reduce red tape for industries, manufacturers and developers.
The state Department of Environmental Protection proposed changing state rules Oct. 27 to remove limits for discharges of certain toxic chemicals and ease the standards on others.
State environmental officials said the proposed changes would not diminish water quality in Pennsylvania, the nation’s second-largest discharger of toxic chemicals into streams and rivers.
Environmental groups attacked the proposed changes as a threat to clean water, saying the state shouldn’t be rolling back regulations while it still ranks so high in toxic discharge.
