Hipp posts upset--Unseeded Jenny Hipp of Fountain Valley beat top-seeded Kelly Six of Esperanza, 6-2, 6-2, to advance to today’s championship in singles.
In the South Coast League finals:
Esmero wins again--Mater Dei junior Melissa Esmero won her third consecutive league title, defeating Capistrano Valley junior Jenny Bailey, 6-1, 6-2, at the Laguna Niguel Racquet Club.
In the Garden Grove League boys’ cross-country finals:
Santiago wins--Santiago junior Rene Rangel won in 15:25 over three miles at Mile Square Park to help Santiago win the team title.
In the Olympic League:
Gavin wins again--Orange Lutheran’s Taylor Gavin won his second consecutive league title, completing three miles in 16:35 at Craig Regional Park. Orange Lutheran won the team title with 32 points.
In the Garden Grove League girls’ cross-country finals:
Pacifica wins--Sophomore Natalie Perkins won in 18:16 over three miles at Mile Square Park.
In the Olympic League:
Bell wins--Jennifer Bell won in 20:24 to lead Orange Lutheran (33 points) to its ninth consecutive league title.
In the Orange League girls’ golf finals:
Bollini wins--Rosary’s Romina Bollini shot a two-under round on the final day at Alta Vista to win with a score of 123. Valencia’s Nikki Glowin tied for second at 126 and beat Rosary’s Maggie Barnett in a playoff to win the league’s final qualifying spot for the Southern Section individual finals.
In Tournament of Champions field hockey semifinals:
Edison 0, Fountain Valley 0 (Edison wins on strokes, 3-2)--Michelle Large, Ann Wiles and Emily Nehrig converted Edison’s first three chances in the shootout, advancing the Chargers (14-0-1) to Saturday’s championship against Huntington Beach (10-3-2), a 1-0 winner over Santiago.
In Pacific Coast League girls’ volleyball:
Laguna Beach 3, University 0--Kristen Gunderson had 25 kills for host Laguna Beach (13-5, 10-0), which won, 15-13, 15-2, 15-11, to win its 11th consecutive league title.
In the Sea View League:
Newport Harbor 3, Corona del Mar 0--April Ross had 13 kills as the Sailors won, 15-7, 15-1, 15-2.
In Pacific Coast League water polo:
Laguna Beach 10, University 9 (OT)--Johnny Geiger scored with seven seconds left in overtime to lead Laguna Beach (12-12, 5-0).
