Boys & Girls Club Cuts 2 Positions

Budget cuts have forced the Boys & Girls Club of Oxnard and Port Hueneme to cut two positions and mount a fund-raising campaign.

The club is one of 59 agencies that had their support cut after United Way announced a $1.2-million deficit last May. The action cost the club $56,000.

To fill the gap, the club has set a goal of raising $40,000 for its annual Back-A-Winner Program, which seeks sponsorships of $200 for one year of a child’s activities at the club.

Russ Goodman, the club’s president, said no youth programs will be cut if the goals are met.

“I believe we’ve taken all the necessary steps to employ this contingency plan,” he said. “Now we have to wait for it to produce results.”

The Boys & Girls Club offers youngsters sports, computer education, homework help, after-school care and weekend outings.
