NEWHALL — A 1-year-old boy was in critical condition Wednesday, a day after being hit by a car in front of his home, Los Angeles sheriff’s deputies said.
The toddler, who wandered into the street in the 25000 block of Walnut Street and was hit by a car at 5:10 p.m. Tuesday, was taken to Childrens Hospital of Los Angeles by a county Fire Department helicopter.
Hospital spokesman Steve Rutledge said the boy suffered two skull fractures, a lacerated spleen, bruised lungs and was on a respirator Wednesday.
Sheriff’s Sgt. Steve Mulcahy said the car that struck the boy was traveling at a normal rate of speed and the driver was not at fault.
By the time deputies arrived at the scene, the parents and the boy were already on their way to the hospital and were not questioned, Mulcahy said.
