Mexico to Charge $15 Fee to Visitors Beyond Border

LOS ANGELES — Foreigners who visit Mexico beyond the border area will be charged a $15 fee, that nation’s Los Angeles tourism director said Wednesday.
The fee will affect visitors who travel more than 16 miles from the border, said tourism official Jorge Gamboa. Those traveling along the border strips who do not exceed a 72-hour period will not be charged, Gamboa said. Visitors will be trusted to comply with the three-day requirement.
Students, seekers of political asylum and those defined as “distinguished visitors” under Mexico’s immigration laws will be exempt, Gamboa said.
In 1998, 22 million tourists visited Mexico, 87% of them from the United States.
The fee will help raise about $120 million, which will be used to improve visitor services and to promote tourism, Gamboa said.
