Universal ‘Wasteland’

The photograph of the cast of “Wasteland” accompanying Greg Braxton’s article “A Mad Dash for Diversity” (Aug. 9) really gave me a laugh. Diversity? I thought “diversity” meant difference; you know, variety.
To me, variety doesn’t just mean throwing a black, Asian or Latino actor in among an ensemble of GQ models who went to acting school. Am I crazy? Doesn’t being diverse imply a variety of body types, age groups, cultural biases, accents and philosophies as well as racial background? Take a look around you at the supermarket, DMV or on a bus if you want to see what a diversity of real people looks like.

Why do young people have such an aversion to smiling? I can’t remember the last time I saw a photo of a rock group, model, movie or TV starlet smiling. The accepted pose seems to be sneering down the lens of the camera with the attitude of “I don’t give a . . . !”
The cast from “Wasteland” looks totally unapproachable and I would never watch their show.
