Drug giant SmithKline Beecham said Chief Executive Jan Leschly will retire in April, five months earlier than previously planned, in a move some analysts said may open the way to renewed merger talks with Glaxo Wellcome. Leschly will be succeeded by Jean-Pierre Garnier, chief operating officer at the company. During a conference call, Garnier avoided making any direct comment on Glaxo.
