DIVISION IX CHAMPIONSHIP GAME

Brea Olinda (12-0-1) vs. La Verne Bonita (13-0)
7:30 TONIGHT
MT. SAN ANTONIO COLLEGE
The Division IX playoffs have held form as top-seeded La Verne Bonita meets second-seeded Brea Olinda. One team will take home the championship for the first time in decades; the Wildcats haven’t won a title since 1963, the Bearcats since 1945. Bonita features the more balanced offense. Quarterback Shaun Abkarian (three interceptions in 185 passes) and running back DeAndre Belin are equally dangerous. Receiver Riccardo Stewart (1,118 yards) is also a threat on defense, where he has seven interceptions. Brea’s No. 1 weapon is running back Kenny Washington, who has come on strong during the latter portion of the season. Expect the Wildcats to pound the ball with Washington and sprinkle in occasional passes from sophomore quarterback Steve Stagnaro, who has displayed maturity well beyond his age. Each team has steamrolled opponents in the playoffs, but Brea has displayed a slightly stingier defense, giving up 13.3 points per game to Bonita’s 16.6. Senior Nick Stagnaro has been the Wildcats’ defensive gem, racking up 11 interceptions this season.
