Brea Olinda Loses Lead, Game

Brea Olinda opened an 11-point lead after a quarter, then saw it slip away and lost to Copperas Cove of Texas, 55-44, Saturday in the second round of the Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions.
It was the second year in a row the Ladycats lost to Copperas Cove, the defending champions in the tournament’s National Championship Division. Brea Olinda, top-ranked in Orange County, fell to 8-2.
Cheslea Trotter had 15 points and 12 rebounds for Brea Olinda, which had a 19-8 lead after one quarter and led, 29-24, at the half. Brea Olinda was outrebounded, 45-28, by Copperas Cove (10-0) and couldn’t contain Purdue-bound Shereka Wright, who had 23 points and 11 rebounds.
In the National Open Division:
No. 2 Mater Dei 59, Santa Barbara 48--Kyra Melville had 14 points, six assists and five steals for Mater Dei (7-1) in a consolation game. Teammate Maile Shimoda also scored 14 points. Mater Dei will play Arizona Chaparral at 3 p.m. Monday at the UCSB Recreation Center.
No. 3 Troy 48, Moreno Valley 46--Sophomore Veronica Johns-Richardson scored the game-winner on a layup at the buzzer in a consolation quarterfinal. Richardson scored 22 points and Katie Hardeman added 18 for Troy.
