Cal Gives Stanford a Scare

OAKLAND — Kris Weems hit a go-ahead three-point shot with 1:04 remaining and No. 4 Stanford withstood a last-second shooting flurry to beat California, 57-55, Wednesday night.

Weems’ basket was Stanford’s first since Michael McDonald’s driving layup with 12:25 remaining that put the Cardinal, 19-3 overall and 9-1 in the Pacific 10, in a 44-42 lead.

With both teams in foul trouble and locked in a bitter defensive battle in the second half, the bulk of the points in the final minutes came from the free-throw line.

Stanford point guard Arthur Lee picked up his fourth foul on a charging call with 11 minutes left and didn’t return until 4:40 remained with Stanford trailing, 52-50.

Thomas Kilgore made one of two free throws and Raymond King scored on a driving layup as Cal (12-8, 3-7) took a 55-50 lead with 3:30 left. But Peter Sauer and Tim Young each made two free throws, pulling Stanford to within 55-54, and Weems then made the decisive three-point basket.

With 10 seconds left, Lee missed and Sean Lampley got the rebound for Cal. Gill and Kilgore both missed three-point tries and Carl Boyd’s putback came after the buzzer.
