Long Beach-based painters Sandow Birk and Ann Chamberlin, mixed-media specialist Michael R. Flechtner of Van Nuys, Los Angeles installation artist Mineko Grimmer and Santa Monica-based sculptor Jim Isermann have each won $15,000 artist fellowships from the California Community Foundation J. Paul Getty Trust Fund for the Visual Arts.
The annual fellowship program honors mid-career artists whose work is already known in the community but for whom the award may boost their artistic development.
In addition, the fund has awarded $130,000 in 1999 grants to seven established arts organizations: Pasadena’s Armory Center for the Arts ($5,000), East Los Angeles’ Self-Help Graphics ($20,000), L.A.’s Center for the Study of Political Graphics ($5,000), the Long Beach Museum of Art ($15,000), L.A.’s Plaza de la Raza ($25,000), Venice’s Social and Public Art Resource Center ($30,000) and the Cal State Long Beach University Art Museum ($30,000).
The California Community Foundation Getty Fund for the Visual Arts was established in 1987 by a $3-million gift from the J. Paul Getty Trust.
