Ayala 60, Channel Islands 56--Who changed the channel?
Channel Islands, looking like a world beater in the first half, stopped, dropped and crawled through a rough second half in a second-round loss to third-seeded Chino Ayala at Channel Islands.
Channel Islands held a 30-14 lead midway through the second quarter and was up by 12 at halftime.
But using its size inside and a deeper bench, Ayala (26-4) outscored Channel Islands in the second half, 36-20.
Channel Islands (21-8) scored only four points in the final six minutes, turning the ball over seven times and shooting only four of 13 in the fourth quarter.
“It’s easier to lose a game by 30 than to lose like this against the No. 3 seed,” Channel Islands Coach Pat Bell said. “Real tough way [to end the season].”
Fatigue played a factor for Channel Islands, which used only three players off its bench, none of whom scored.
“It’s just a factor of who gets run down most,” Ayala Coach Mel Sims said. “Fatigue seemed to affect their shooting.”
UCLA-bound guard Jaline Bradley scored 20 points in her final game for Channel Islands.
Candice Allen scored 23 for Ayala, which starts two freshmen.
