Diver’s Body Found Stuck Against Grate

EL SEGUNDO — A diver drowned Wednesday afternoon after he apparently was sucked against a grate covering an underwater pipe at a power plant.
The diver, whose name has not been released, was spearfishing about 300 yards offshore with three friends. When the three divers surfaced about 4 p.m., they could not find their friend, so they contacted lifeguards.
Divers searched the area and found the body about 8:30 p.m.
“It appears that he was sucked in against the grate and held there,” said lifeguard Capt. Dave Story. “We’ve had a few cases like this in the past, but I don’t remember anyone drowning.”
