Focus Is Again on Dissident Army Officer in Mexico

An army officer arrested after leading an unprecedented protest against human rights abuses in Mexico’s armed forces may have succeeded in drawing even more attention to his cause with his detention, military analysts said Thursday.

Lt. Col. Hildegardo Bacilio Gomez, a 20-year army veteran and fugitive, was arrested Wednesday, three months after he astounded Mexicans by leading about 50 military and ex-military men in a protest against injustice in military courts.

The Dec. 18 march was an unprecedented public display of discontent within the army and left many wondering whether the country’s moves toward democracy was catching up with the military.

The army surgeon’s eventual court-martial on charges including sedition, desertion and defaming the army could continue to bring attention to his cause, analysts said.
