A Commie/Sci-Fi Connection?

I must take issue with an item in “And They Said It Wouldn’t Last,” by Judith I. Brennan (Special Millennium Issue/Hollywood, Nov. 7). The assertion that the rise of communism produced “a scary new genre: sci-fi” is patently wrong.
Science fiction exists in literature and film independent of communism. It is true that sci-fi was used as a means of expressing fear of communism, but it has been used to express many other fears and ideas. Think of the Japanese monster movies; they touch on an entirely different fear.
