WINNETKA — Animal services officers captured two German shepherds suspected of attacking a man Wednesday morning.
The 48-year-old man, whose name has not been released, suffered severe facial cuts from one or more dog bites. “He’s going to require plastic surgery,” said Jackie David, spokeswoman for the Department of Animal Services for the city of Los Angeles.
The man was treated and released Wednesday from West Hills Hospital.
The two dogs, one male and one female, were rounded up when officers followed them into the backyard of a Winnetka house on the 19700 block of Kittridge Street, where they presumably lived.
Officers believe that the dogs had run out of the yard because the gate could not close properly.
The dogs had been neutered or spayed, David said. “Animals not spayed or neutered are three times more likely to bite than animals who have been,” she added.
But when officers examined the dogs, only the male had blood on its muzzle, David said.
Animal Services is still trying to reach the dogs’ owner and will hold a hearing to determine their fate.
“The male dog will probably be destroyed. The female dog will probably not be destroyed,” David said.
