* Kudos to the Los Angeles Philharmonic for courting Deborah Borda and bringing her to our city (Sept. 30)! I had the pleasure of knowing Deborah some years ago when she worked her magic creating the highly successful triumvirate at the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra. While the task ahead may not be easy, she clearly loves the challenge. Not only is she intelligent, talented and delightful, she has become the best at doing what needs to be done for the sake of the art and the pleasure and education of the audience. We will be very fortunate to have her expertise and vision accompany us into the new century and millennium.

* As a regular attendee of the weekend concerts at the Hollywood Bowl, I was distressed at some of the information given in your Oct. 3 editorial about attendance at the bowl. I cannot speak regarding the Tuesday and Thursday concerts or Sundays this season, but having attended virtually every engagement that John Mauceri conducted with the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, I can tell you that attendance was almost always sold out. You only had to look around to see that the seats were filled up to the top “tree people” and we were all having a great time.
I welcome Borda to Los Angeles and hope that she realizes what a treasure she has in Mauceri. We in Los Angeles certainly do.
