In the Academy League:

Capistrano Valley Christian 38, Downey Calvary Chapel 6--Dustin Smith’s second-half performance broke open a close game and enabled Capistrano Valley Christian to easily win its Academy League opener at Pius X in Downey.

Smith scored three of his four rushing touchdowns on the Eagles’ first three second-half possessions. He finished with 220 yards rushing in 26 carries.

Smith’s first touchdown, on a one-yard plunge, came with 5:06 left in the first quarter. The Eagles (5-1, 1-0) took a 14-0 lead at the half on Bryan Peters’ 76-yard touchdown run late in the second quarter.

Smith gained 40 yards on the opening drive of the third quarter, and scored on a three-yard run. After Booth Fellers’ interception, Smith scored on a 28-yard run, and he added a 34-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter.

Capistrano Valley Christian had 391 yards in total offense and its defense limited Downey Calvary Chapel (4-2, 0-1) to 190.
