Everybody seems to have a reaction to former Canyon coach Harry Welch coming out of retirement to become an assistant at Valencia.
Coach Mike Herrington of Hart insisted Welch’s midseason hiring “doesn’t affect the Foothill League race at all.”
But with Valencia on a collision course to meet Hart for the Foothill title on Oct. 28, Welch’s presence adds intrigue. He guided Canyon to three Southern Section championships in the 1980s.
“I think it’s great,” Coach Bill Redell of St. Francis said.
Redell, who also sells insurance and has Welch as one of his clients, added, “I figure with the money he gets at Valencia, he can increase his coverage.”
Herrington doesn’t seem concerned. His record against Welch is 4-1.
