Goni’s Goal Lifts Vanguard in Men’s Soccer

Diego Goni scored in the 87th minute to break a scoreless tie and Vanguard held on to defeat host Christian Heritage, 1-0, in a Golden State Athletic Conference men’s soccer game Wednesday.
Goni scored his conference-leading 17th goal on a header off a corner kick from Josh McLeish for the Lions (10-3, 6-1), who have won 10 of their last 11.
Christian Heritage (9-6, 3-4) outshot Vanguard, 21-11.
In nonconference women’s soccer:
Chapman 1, Claremont 0--Aja Cordova scored the only goal for visiting Chapman (10-4), which posted its fourth consecutive shutout.
In the All-American women’s tennis championships:
Diaz advances--UC Irvine’s Maureen Diaz defeated Stanford’s Keiko Tokuda, 6-3, 6-4, to advance to the main draw at the Riviera Tennis Club in Palos Verdes.
Diaz, a freshman, is the first Irvine player to advance to the main draw.
In doubles, Irvine’s Darian Chappell and Jonni Seymour lost in the third round to UCLA’s Petya Marinova and Sara Walker, 7-5, 6-2.
In nonconference women’s volleyball:
La Verne 3, Chapman 2--Erin Dedic had 17 kills for host Chapman (8-12), which lost, 7-15, 6-15, 15-7, 15-11, 15-12.
