ORANGE COUNTY / PREP FOOTBALL : Hendricks, Estancia Run Over Magnolia
- Share via
Marshall Hendricks scored four touchdowns and racked up 213 yards in 14 carries as Estancia routed Magnolia, 35-0, Friday night at Newport Harbor High.
But his longest scoring run did not come while playing running back, but as a defensive back. In the second quarter, the senior transfer from Edison intercepted a pass from Magnolia quarterback Jacob Davis at the Estancia 25-yard line and ran it all the way back.
Hendricks had two of Estancia’s three interceptions. The third of those was by linebacker Cesar Romero at the Sentinel 30 after Andy Romo tipped Davis’ throw. This led to the Eagles’ last touchdown, a two-yard run by junior fullback Fahad Jahid with 48 seconds remaining in the third quarter.
Hendricks’ score made it 21-0 with 1:28 left in the first half.
Estancia’s tough 3-5-3 defense held Magnolia to 41 yards. Davis completed only six of 20 passes for 95 yards and was sacked once, by Romo.
As expected, the Eagles alternated Kenny Valbuena and Jeremy Valdes at quarterback. They combined for 83 yards passing. Valbuena transferred to Fountain Valley and practiced with the Barons in the spring and summer, but returned to Estancia after a few days of fall drills.
Estancia has won four of its last five season openers and is 17-18 in openers overall.
