Jersey Standard couldn’t use the name “Esso” when it first came out here to do retail business because “S.O.” was a registered trademark of Standard Oil of California (Chevron), so it adopted the name “Enco” for this area.
Thus, a more apt definition for 108 Across (Puzzler, April 2) might have been “old eastern gas brand.”
