Schultz’s Numbers Are Adding Up to the Draft

At 6 feet 7, lanky right-hander Mike Schultz of Loyola Marymount is accustomed to taking long strides. He added another big step toward becoming a top draft choice by tossing a complete-game victory against Pepperdine on Sunday.

Schultz, who attended Cleveland High, struck out nine to give him 276 in his career, the sixth-highest total in Loyola history. The victory was his 21st, good for 10th on the Lions’ all-time list.

Schultz allowed seven hits in Loyola’s 4-3 victory, which pulled the Lions (23-13, 11-4) within a half-game of Pepperdine (22-16, 11-3) in the West Coast Conference.

Baseball America magazine rates Schultz as a possible first-round draft choice. If that’s the case, the former Lion pitchers ahead of him on career lists can breathe easy. He won’t be back for his senior season.
