From Times Wire Reports
State investigators barred ex-President Suharto from leaving the country for six months, fearing he could flee abroad to escape corruption charges. A government lawyer heading the probe against the 78-year-old former strongman said he made the decision after receiving reports that Suharto’s children had been planning to get him out of the country. Suharto’s defense lawyer denied his client planned to leave. Suharto became the target of graft allegations after he was forced from office amid riots in May 1998.
