Recycling is the theme of this week’s Earth Day celebration at Cal State Northridge, where numerous eco-themed events are scheduled.
The lineup of events includes a tree-planting ceremony between the university’s science buildings and a concert by folk singer Annie Rapid.
University administrators are urging the CSUN community to recycle throughout the week and hope students will respond.
The week’s schedule includes:
* Monday, recycling bins for old records and office supplies are to be placed around the campus.
* Tuesday, representatives of environmental agencies and campus groups will sponsor an Earth Fair from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Rapid’s concert is scheduled for noon, coinciding with an aluminum can collection to benefit Habitat for Humanity.
* Wednesday, volunteers will plant 40 trees.
* Thursday, Dr. Gong-Yuh Lin will discuss lowering levels of asthma-inducing ozone in Southern California. The talk will begin at 12:30 p.m. in the student union’s Santa Clarita Room.
* Thursday through Saturday, hazardous waste will be collected from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Parking Lot T. Acceptable items include motor oil, antifreeze, pesticides and paint. Items such as tires, ammunition and biological waste can not be taken.
Since 1991, CSUN students have recycled more than 500,000 pounds of aluminum cans and paper, Signett said.
