Paris’ Louvre museum this month opened a new wing housing its first-ever collection of primitive art objects, some thousands of years old. It includes 120 statues, masks and other items from Africa, Asia, Oceania and North and South America. Louvre officials had long opposed displaying primitive art alongside Greek and Roman treasures. But French President Jacques Chirac, a fan of primitive art, pushed the project through. . . . The Grand Canyon Railway, which late last year began rail-air packages to the Grand Canyon from Long Beach and Phoenix, has discontinued both, citing “poor response.” Hoping for better luck with Las Vegas, this month the firm began day trips from the gambling mecca to the national park. Starting at $642 total for two adults, the trip includes a guided park tour and a vintage train ride from Williams, Ariz. Air is via the railway’s partner, Farwest Airlines. Tel. (800) 843-8724.
