Council to Consider Contract for Shelter

The City Council is expected Tuesday to consider its policy on housing the homeless when it decides whether to renew a contract for the Salvation Army to run a winter warming shelter.

Oxnard has contracted with the Salvation Army for two years to run a shelter during the winter. City Housing Director Sal Gonzalez said prior to that, the county and other agencies operated a winter shelter at the National Guard building on K Street.

Gonzalez said the Salvation Army shelter was intended last winter for Oxnard residents only, but that was changed when Ventura made it known that it would not provide one.

Gonzalez said he hopes the county looks to find a regional solution to the problem.

“Despite general agreement that homelessness is a regional issue, there has been failure to provide a truly regional approach to the problems of homelessness, particularly in the west county,” Gonzalez said.

The City Council meets at 5 p.m. in City Hall, 305 W. 3rd St.
