Simers Reaction Keeps Simmering

While reading T.J. Simers’ column (Aug. 1), I came across a small blurb in which Simers insinuated Carson Palmer was destined for the NFL Hall of Fame. Shocked, I read the piece over and over until it became clear--T.J. was actually saying something positive about a sports personality.
All I can say to T.J. is he had better watch it, feel-good stories about A.C. Green and his little green bear could be just around the corner.

T.J. Simers’ way of honoring Jerry West’s “brilliant beyond compare” career is to rip its ending. How typical. Simers is the kind of self-centered slime who can’t fathom anyone with different motivations than his own.
Wouldn’t West have appeared at the championship parade if he wanted people to “pay homage”? Monday’s low-key, glitter-free news conference was West’s last gift to a team and city which often place style over substance.
It figures a man who spouts venom at anyone and everyone just to get his picture in the paper wouldn’t understand.

I take exception to reader Ed Fallon’s letter last Saturday wherein he claimed T.J. Simers to be “pointless, humorless, mean-spirited, uninformed and graceless.”
A valid critique of any writer should not be limited to his good qualities.

Sportsmanship is defined as skill in or devotion to sports, especially involving honest rivalry and graceful acceptance of results.
I suggest that this would be an excellent editorial policy for your sports section, which now consists mostly of derogation, particularly in the columns of T.J. Simers and Thomas Bonk.
They should be replaced and transferred to some sort of tabloid publication.

Today there is Jim Rome. Before him there was Jim Healy. In entertainment, there is Don Rickles. The common thread that links all of them: To be insulted by them is a badge of honor. It signifies your arrival in the big time.
Somehow the vociferous anti-Simers crowd has missed the message. They just don’t get it, but I bet F.P. Santangelo does.

I like T.J. Simers. I can read as much of his column as I want or have time for, stop halfway through and never feel I missed anything--including his point.
