29 WWII Vets Set Off on Atlantic Voyage

Twenty-nine U.S. World War II veterans--average age 72--defied warnings and left Gibraltar for Alabama in an aging tank transport vessel with shaky steering and no safety equipment. The 328-foot-long ship, known as an LST-325, was built to transport Sherman tanks during World War II. Sailors aboard the destroyer Arleigh Burke bade farewell to the LST-325--which in Navy lingo means landing ship, tank--as it was tugged away from port.
