When it comes to two-sport athletes, sophomore Steve Smith of Taft High is proving to be in a class of his own.
Coming off a stellar football season, Smith made 14 of 18 shots, scored 32 points and had 10 rebounds Wednesday to help Taft beat Carson, 73-60, in a nonleague boys’ basketball game at Taft.
Smith made seven consecutive shots as Taft (4-2) extended a 13-point halftime lead.
Melvin Robbins, a 6-foot-4 senior playing his first season of basketball, contributed 17 points for the Toreadors.
Carson (4-2) played without injured 6-8 center Ikene Ebekne.
