Seton Hall Is Sluggish in Victory

Seton Hall, coming off its first loss, was primed for an upset, but the No. 9 Pirates scrambled and scratched at the end and beat winless Pennsylvania, 80-78, Wednesday night at East Rutherford, N.J.

Samuel Dalembert made a big defensive play with 10 seconds to play, then scored off an alley-oop pass from Ty Shine with 3.9 seconds left to give the Pirates the victory.

“I saw there was 10 seconds left and I just ran as fast as I could to get in position and I just put my hands up and Ty made a great pass,” said the 6-11 sophomore who finished with 18 points and six rebounds.

The Pirates (6-1) were coming off the loss to Illinois on Saturday in which they blew a 21-point first-half lead. This was quite different as the Quakers (0-7) opened the game by making 12 of their first 13 shots and took a 29-12 lead with 13:06 left in the first half.

No. 20 Maryland 93, Maryland Baltimore County 67--Juan Dixon scored 23 points at College Park, Md., as the Terrapins (6-3) extended their nonconference home winning streak to 73 games, longest such streak in the nation.

No. 23 Mississippi 58, Southeast Louisiana 46--Rahim Lockhart scored 21 points, grabbed 14 rebounds and sparked a 13-0 run in the second half at Oxford, Miss., as the Rebels (8-0) extended their nonconference home winning streak to 41 games.

OTHER GAMES

Denver 54, Oregon State 53--B.J. Pratt scored 24 points and made two free throws with 4.3 seconds left to give the Pioneers the victory at Denver. Oregon State (4-4) was led by Jason Heide who had 18 points.

Fresno State 64, Santa Clara 51--Chris Jefferies scored 13 of his game-high 20 points in the second half as the Bulldogs (5-2) won at the new $11.75-million Leavey Center in Santa Clara. The Broncos (5-2) had played their first six games on the road.

Ohio State 71, St. John’s 58--Boban Savovic fueled a first-half spurt and Brian Brown scored 18 points as the Buckeyes (6-2) won their fourth in a row at Columbus, Ohio. The victory was Ohio State’s third in a row over the Red Storm (4-4).

Michigan 89, Bowling Green 71--LaVell Blanchard scored a career-high 28 points as the Wolverines (3-5) ended a four-game losing streak at Ann Arbor, Mich. Len Matela led Bowling Green (3-3) with 16 points.

San Diego 74, Portland State 60--Andre Laws made a crucial three-point basket at San Diego to help the Toreros extend their winning streak to six games. San Diego (7-1) is off to its best start since the program was elevated to Division I status in 1979-80.

WOMEN

No. 11 Texas Tech 79, No. 14 Oregon 75--Plenette Pierson and Jia Perkins each made two free throws in the final 12 seconds to help the Red Raiders (6-1) defeat the Ducks in overtime at Lubbock, Texas. Oregon (4-2) had rallied from a 12-point deficit.
