From Times Wire Reports
Rescuers managed to pass food and water through a narrow pipe to miners trapped in Orkney, 110 miles southwest of Johannesburg. Rescue teams at the African Rainbow Minerals gold mine said at least four miners had died. Rescue workers made contact with the team leader late Tuesday night. He confirmed that four colleagues were dead and that two were seriously injured and separated from the main group of eight survivors. Another miner remained unaccounted for. The miners were trapped 1 1/4 miles underground by a cave-in Monday.
