Vietnamese Martyr Is Among Beatified

From Polish nuns executed by Nazis to victims of 17th-century religious warfare in Brazil, Pope John Paul II honored 44 martyrs at the Vatican, holding up their lives as profiles in courage for Roman Catholics. The honor, called beatification, is the last formal step before the process of sainthood can begin. Among those declared blessed at the ceremony in St. Peter’s Square was Vietnam’s first martyr, Andre de Phu Yen, who was beheaded in 1644.
