Council Panel OKs Extra $26 Million for City Hall Fixes

LOS ANGELES — To meet rising costs, a City Council panel on Friday authorized an extra $26 million for the renovation of Los Angeles City Hall, a project now expected to cost $299 million.
The panel also approved a far smaller amount--$175,000--to replace the elevator at Van Nuys City Hall.
The City Council’s Ad Hoc City Hall Seismic Committee approved the cost increases for the retrofit of Los Angeles City Hall, including $12 million blamed on higher-than-expected construction bids caused by a year’s delay in the competitive process.
The panel also approved $9 million in new contingencies for making sure the building interior is ready for occupancy, including preparation of offices and committee rooms.
An extra $5 million was added to the budget for communications and technology features, including installation of fiber-optic cables, “to make it a first-class office building,” said Chief Legislative Analyst Ron Deaton.
The additional costs still must be approved by the full council.
