Ciena Profit Soars

Ciena Corp., a maker of equipment to boost the capacity of fiber-optic networks, said its fiscal second-quarter profit climbed 36-fold to $18.4 million, or 12 cents a share, from $500,000 a year ago, spurred by new business from Qwest Communications International Inc. Analysts were expecting 10 cents a share. Revenue jumped 66% to $185.7 million, topping most estimates of $170 million.
