ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Tim Hearst
SCHOOL: Royal
YEAR: Sophomore
SPORT: Cross-country
SEASON AT A GLANCE: The 5-foot-5, 100-pound Hearst has won four of six races and finished third in the other two after a promising freshman track season in which he ran 9:53.20 in the 3,200 meters.
WEEK AT A GLANCE: Hearst won the Marmonte League finals after missing the previous three races because of a lower back injury that prevented him from running for two weeks. He led Royal to a 1-2-3 finish and helped the Highlanders to a 31-41 victory over runner-up Newbury Park that gave them their first league title since 1974. “He ran a great race,” assistant coach Ryan Luce of Royal said. “When it came down to it, that boy was just 100% [mentally tough].”
