Fullback Angel Santiago scored on a 12-yard run in overtime to give Fontana Miller a 27-21 victory over Santa Margarita in a Southern Section Division I first-round game Friday at Saddleback College.
Santa Margarita (8-3) scored 14 points in the final 2:57 of the fourth quarter. The Eagles tied the score at 21-21 with 2:09 remaining on an 18-yard pass from Matt Dlugolecki to Curtis Cooper and Cooper’s successful extra-point kick.
Santa Margarita had the ball first in overtime, during which each team gets possession at the 25-yard line.
On the first play, Tyler Thompson was tackled by Santiago and Thompson fumbled. Josh MacMillan recovered for the Rebels.
Miller quarterback Kyle Jacobo, a freshman, gained 13 yards for a first down on the next play.
Santiago then burst into the secondary, carrying several tacklers with him into the end zone.
For three quarters the game resembled Miller’s 31-0 victory over Santa Margarita in last season’s first-round playoff victory. Entering the fourth quarter, Santa Margarita trailed, 21-7, and did not have an offensive touchdown.
Santa Margarita caught a break when it tackled Miller’s punter at the Rebel 19-yard line with 4:09 remaining. Thompson scored five plays later on a one-yard run to make it 21-14.
Santa Margarita recovered an onside kick and drove downfield for the game-tying touchdown.
