Los Altos Has Too Much for Western

Friday night’s matchup between host Hacienda Heights Los Altos and Western, top-ranked teams in their respective Southern Section divisions, wasn’t much of a match.

Los Altos, ranked No. 1 in Division VII, used a potent offense and a dominating defense to roll over Western, 41-14.

Los Altos (5-0), which is averaging 42 points a game, scored three touchdowns in a span of 7 minutes 25 seconds during the second quarter to take control.

Western (4-1), ranked No. 1 in Division IX, had averaged 48 points in its last three games, but the Pioneers were held to a touchdown in each half.

“We played too sloppy of a game to beat a team of this caliber,” Western Coach Toby Howell said. “We made too many mistakes and had too many penalties. They simply are a better football team than we are.”

With Los Altos leading, 7-6, early in the second quarter, Shawn Cody capped a 10-play, 72-yard scoring drive with a one-yard touchdown run for a 13-6 lead.

Two Pioneer mistakes midway through the quarter led to two more Los Altos scores.

A poor snap on a Western punt gave the Conquerors a first down on the Western 15-yard line. Five plays later, Felipe Aguilar, who threw three touchdown passes, completed a four-yard touchdown pass to Cody.

On Western’s next possession, Rodney Eason fumbled on the Pioneer 14-yard line. Aguilar quickly converted the mistake into a four-yard touchdown pass to Ramon Martinez. Martinez finished with seven catches for 74 yards.
