Forensic experts found the remains of three people at a former air base near the Honduras-Nicaragua border that was used to train U.S.-backed Contra rebels.
The discovery Monday came after six hours of digging at El Aguacate air base, where Honduran officials expect to find the remains of 80 of 185 leftists the army killed between 1979 and 1990. Laboratory tests will be needed to identify the remains, officials said.
The U.S. built the base in 1984 as a training center for the Contras, who fought the leftist Sandinista regime in Nicaragua in the 1980s. The base, about 80 miles east of the Honduran capital, Tegucigalpa, was turned over to the Honduran military before being abandoned in 1994.
