Unhealthy Immigration

The report suggesting a link between fetal health and smog is frightful news (“Air Pollution Harmful to Babies, Fetuses, Studies Say,” Dec. 16). This is especially so when we learn it is occurring in areas of California that meet current air quality standards.
The comment that “the findings have helped prompt California officials to seek more stringent smog controls” ignores root causes--the relationship between population growth and environmental impact. As long as California adds half a million people each year--mostly through immigration--there can be no way to improve things. The only real remedy is more stringent immigration controls.
