Tire Comes Off Truck, Kills Oncoming Driver

A driver was killed and his passenger injured Saturday when their pickup was hit by a spare tire that came off a cement truck on Interstate 5.
California Highway Patrol officers said the cement truck was traveling south just before 8 a.m. when it lost the tire, which rolled over the center divider and flew into the cab of the oncoming pickup.
The pickup driver, a Bellflower resident whose name was withheld, died at the scene. His unidentified passenger was hospitalized with moderate injuries.
Officers did not know if the cement truck driver--who did not stop--was aware of the accident.
