Eason Makes Commitment to Utah State

Jerome Eason of Antelope Valley High has committed to play football at Utah State.
The 6-foot-5 receiver is an academic nonqualifier and must sit out his freshman year, forfeiting a season of eligibility.
* Greg Kavulich of Loyola High, a receiver and defensive back who lives in West Hills, signed with St. Mary’s, a Division I independent.
BASEBALL
* The New York Yankees have signed Bobby Hughes, former Notre Dame High catcher, to a minor league contract.
Hughes spent last season with the Cleveland Indians’ triple-A team in Buffalo, batting .254 with seven home runs and 32 runs batted in.
Hughes, 29, played parts of the 1998 and 1999 seasons with the Milwaukee Brewers, batting .238 with 12 home runs and 37 RBIs.
* Simi Valley High will retire the jersey of pitcher Jeff Weaver during halftime ceremonies of its basketball game Friday night against Royal.
